Financial Assistance

The YMCA of Northern BC believes everyone should have the opportunity to take part in our programs and enjoy our facilities and services. Financial assistance is available for those who feel they would benefit from joining the YMCA but are financially unable, not unwilling, to pay full membership or program fees.

Assisted Membership

Please visit our Member Services desk to pick up an application form and schedule an appointment for an interview. The YMCA of Northern BC Assisted Membership Program is made available through contributions from our YMCA family, which includes members, volunteers and donors.

Assistance Process

To apply for a YMCA of Northern BC Assisted Membership, you will need to go through an interview process and do some preparation work:

  • Before attending an interview to find out if you are eligible for financial assistance, take a tour of the facility. This is a great way to learn more about the YMCA including the wellness areas, schedules and programs.
  • A Member Services representative will explain the interview process and provide you with the appropriate paperwork.
  • The next step is attending an interview, which is available by appointment only through Member Services. Contact Sharon Pepper at 250 562 9341 x 105 to arrange.
  • For your interview, please bring all the required documentation as requested in the application. The information is necessary to help us understand your situation and ensure you receive a fair assessment.


Frequently Asked Questions about Assisted Membership...

Q: How does the YMCA determine how much I can afford to pay?
A: You should pay as much of the fee as you possibly can. Your fee is based on your needs and your current financial situation. We will come to a financial agreement that works for both you and the YMCA.

Q: If I receive assistance, what is expected of me?
A: We ask that all information and fees discussed in your interview be kept confidential. As well, you will be asked to check in with the Membership Director every three months and to complete all payments.

Q: Can the YMCA deny my application for membership and/or program assistance?
A: Your request for assistance could be denied if you do not present the required documentation or if your financial information does not identify an inability to pay the fees.

Q: Is it possible to join the YMCA for free?
A: Everyone must pay some portion of the annual membership/program fee.

Q: How do I renew my membership?
A: All assisted memberships have an expiry date (up to a maximum of one year).To renew your membership you will need to follow the assistance process and have an interview at least one month before your membership expires.


Program Assistance


The YMCA of Northern BC is a proud Jumpstart partner with the Canadian Tire Foundation for Families.

All YMCA children and youth programs are eligible for Jumpstart funding. Funding is allocated on a first come first serve basis, based on need for children between the ages of 4 – 18.
